Digital realism and analog reality Analog film technologies, which for more than a century offered the possibility of creating previously unseen images in motion, have almost completely disappeared in recent years. They have been replaced by digitally produced worlds of images which, despite their sheer endless possibilities, produce a very limited form of “beauty”. However, the combination of analog and digital technologies offers a treasure trove of methods for creating images that are credible precisely because of their abstraction. As part of the lecture series “Aisthesis”, Department of Philosophy, University of Applied Arts Vienna. 19.11.2020, 5:00 pm.

Workshop “Art, Science, and Philosophy” The workshop “Art, Science, and Philosophy” will bring together philosophers, artists and scientists to rethink the concept of art and the concept of nature and “human nature” in the age of technoscience, where the biological sciences become the new technological frontier. This event is part of the research collaboration “Question about the Limits: Art, Science, and Philosophy” between the Department of Media Theory, University of Applied Arts Vienna, and the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature, National Autonomous University of México (UNAM), Mexico City. The project aims to initiate and develop a debate about the relationship of ontology and aesthetics in the age of technoscience from the perspectives of art, science, and philosophy, driven by the question: What is art in the age of technoscience? Vienna according to checkpointmedia – Media based City Tour On 6 December 2011 Virgil Widrich led a group of students from the Hani Rashid architecture class (University of Applied Arts Vienna) through Vienna city centre to two very different scenes of checkpointmedia’s work. In the Mozarthaus Vienna (exhibition architecture by Gustav Pichelmann) the focus was on recreating a historical personality using new media in a listed building. The approach adopted at the Visitor Centre in the Parliament building was entirely different: under the direction of the architects Geiswinkler&Geiswinkler a new structure was built underneath the old historic building in which the history and modus operandi of democracy in Austria are presented with the aid of media. The excursion was rounded off by a talk given by Agnes Hannes in the checkpointmedia offices.

vor – BILD – end Visualisations in science and art Visual perception is a key process for human beings. Consequently, images play an important role in both science and art. In science, images are primary data or serve as visualisations that help to make sense of information. In research, images are accordingly found at the beginning and end of a process of recognition. Images as works of art can be understood as the culmination of creative activity but can equally serve as the inspiration at the beginning of a creative process.
